Yakuza Boys-Love Manga Series “Twittering Birds Never Fly” Set to End in 2-3 Volumes

Sad news for ardent followers of the popular boys-love (BL) manga series Twittering Birds Never Fly (Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai): author Kou Yoneda has announced in the July issue of Kadokawa Media Factory’s manga news magazine Da Vinci that she is planning to end her popular BL series in two or three volumes.

The series has inspired an anime film, Twittering Birds Never Fly – The Clouds Gather (Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai – The Clouds Gather) produced by Fuji TV’s newly-launched boys-love anime label Blue Lynx. Twittering Birds Never Fly is the label’s first movie project. The label also produced the film adaptations of Given and Umibe no Étranger.

The movie opened in Japan last January 15. It was previously announced that the film will have three installments; with the second film’s title already announced as Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai – The Storm Breaks (Twittering Birds Never Fly – The Storm Breaks). No release window has been announced for the second film as of this writing.

The film was directed by Kaori Makita (Yuri!!! On Ice, Banana Fish), with scripts written by Hiroshi Seko (Banana Fish, Mob Psycho 100 II). Music composition was handled by piano trio band H ZETTRIO. The film was animated by studio GRIZZLY.

Twittering Birds Never Fly has been serialized in the HertZ and ihr HertZ magazines since March 2008. The manga is being officially published in English by Juné, the yaoi manga imprint of Digital Manga Publishing. It describes the manga’s story as such:

“The sexually masochistic yakuza boss, Yashiro, isn’t the type to warm up to others easily. But when Chikara Doumeki, his newly hired bodyguard, catches his interest, he reconsiders his “hands-off” policy with subordinates. As Yashiro’s invitations fail, the yakuza boss finds out his bodyguard has a very personal reason for staying at arm’s length.”
