It’s been more than a decade since the highly-popular series The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya aired, and yet it remains fresh in the memory of most. Its mind-blowing plot and gimmicks still have no rival up to this day—Endless Eight episodes, anyone? And of course, who would forget the <iconic song with the equally iconic dance steps, Hare Hare Yukai?
Having war flashbacks from all these memories? Well then, get ready for a major throwback with this news: last June 23, during the Lantis Matsuri concerts, the entire SOS Brigade finally reunited after 12 years! The main cast of Haruhi Suzumiya—Aya Hirano (Haruhi), Tomokazu Sugita (Kyon), Minori Chihara (Yuki Nagato), Yuko Goto (Mikuru Asahina), and Daisuke Ono (Itsuki Koizumi)—got together to perform five songs from the beloved anime series. Hirano first sang “Bōken de-show de-show?” which is the anime’s opening theme, then followed by Chihara performing Yuki’s character song “Yuki, Muon, Madobe Nite”. Yuko Goto then sang “Koi no Mikuru Densetsu”, the OP for “The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina” then Ono sang Itsuki’s character song “Maggare ↓ Spectacle”. Finally the group got together to perform Haruhi Suzumiya’s massively popular ED, “Hare Hare Yukai”.
This was the first time that the SOS Brigade were all together on stage, since they were incomplete during their surprise appearance at the 2017 Animelo Summer Live. During that concert, only Hirano, Chihara and Goto were able to perform. The last time they were all complete on stage was at the “Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekisou (The Extravaganza of Haruhi Suzumiya)" live concert event on March 18, 2007.
Aya Hirano and Minori Chihara also tweeted about their reunion, sharing backstage photos of the five.
In her tweet, Hirano says: “The five gathered…first time in 12 years…since Gekisou!! We performed Hare Hare Yukai as the five of us!! This is the true SOS Brigade!!!!! Thank you so much.”
Chihara also expresses thanks for their reunion, tweeting simply: “Everyone at the SOS Brigade~!! Thanks~~~♡♡♡♡♡”
