A new trailer was just released for the second season of the live-action adaptation of Hikaru Nakamura’s manga Saint Young Men. Definitely not for those sensitive to religious matters, as we get to see Jesus and Buddha try maid cosplay and even blurt out some bleeped-out cuss words. Still here after that disclaimer? Well then, check out the trailer below!
The trailer shows the two divinities basically frolicking around the otaku mecca of Akihabara. The first scene shows Jesus being accosted by a police officer. When the officer asked him his occupation, Jesus matter-of-factly answered, ”Kami-desu” (“I’m a god”). Makes sense, actually.
Other scenes show Buddha making his Instagram debut, and the two gods going on an otaku pilgrimage to Akihabara’s gadgets and electronics districts. They also engage in a freestyle rap battle (they tried so hard, by the way), try out a photo booth, and try their luck in the arcade games in Akihabara. The highlight, however, is Jesus trying on maid cosplay.
As with Saint Young Men’s first season, the second season will be streamed online on Kakao Japan’s streaming service Piccoma TV. Theater screenings are also set for the second season, which will start on June 6. Main cast members Ken’ichi Matsuyama (Jesus Christ) and Shota Sometani (Buddha) are set to reprise their roles, with Yuichi Fukuda still directing the series and penning the script.
Saint Young Men is written and illustrated by Hikaru Nakamura, and is serialized by Kodansha in the seinen magazine Morning 2. A-1 Pictures adapted it into two original animation DVDs and an animated film which premiered on May 2013. Nakamura’s slice of life comedy imagines Jesus Christ and Buddha, founders of two of the biggest world religions, as roommates. The series imagines how these two major religious figures would react to modern society in Japan, and shows their daily life in their small apartment in Tokyo.
