The 1979 Lupin the Third film, Castle of Cagliostro, was announced to be getting a 4K ultra HD blu-ray release. This announcement was made after the 4K ultra HD release of another Lupin the Third film, Lupin vs the Clone.
The movie is the 2nd film in the franchise and is known as the feature film debut of respected anime director Hayao Miyazaki. Besides directing the film, Miyazaki also served as a writer, designer, and storyboardist of the movie. He had previously worked on the Lupin the Third TV anime series, co-directing episodes with his late friend and Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata.
Castle of Cagliostro centers once more on the titular character and master thief Arsene Lupin III. The movie starts with him successfully robbing a casino, but eventually finds out that all the money he stole was fake. He tracks down the source of the bills to the small European nation of Cagliostro, and together with partner-in-crime Jigen, he goes there himself to exact revenge. Once there, they encounter the unhappy royal damsel Clarisse, who is being forced to marry the evil Count Cagliostro. Together with his ex-girlfriend Fujiko, Goemon the swordsman, and a momentary truce with his nemesis Inspector Zenigata, they fight their way through the mysterious castle full of traps and enemies in order to save Clarisse to recover their losses from their casino heist.
Lupin the Third: Castle of Cagliostro’s 4K ultra HD bluray is set to be released on July 24, 2019. The set also comes with a limited edition booklet.
