Japanese Cast for Netflix’s CG animé remake of Saint Seiya Revealed

Last 2017, it was announced that classic animé Saint Seiya will be undergoing a CG remake, in collaboration with Netflix. Just recently, Netflix has announced the Japanese voice cast for their upcoming remake. Below are the voice actors for the five Saints and Athena’s reincarnation:

• Masakazu Morita (Bleach’s Ichigo Kurosaki) as Pegasus Seiya
• Takahiro Sakurai (Code Geass’ Suzaku Kururugi) as Dragon Shiryu
• Hiroaki Miura (World Trigger’s Ryo Utagawa) as Cygnus Hyoga
• Satomi Satou (K-ON’s Ritsu Tainaka) as Andromeda Shun
• Katsuyuki Konishi (Hetalia’s America) as Phoenix Ikki
• Fumiko Orikasa (Bleach’s Rukia Kuchiki) as Saori Kido

The new adaptation is officially titled Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac, and is set to run for 12 episodes at 30 minutes each. The first season will follow the Galaxian Wars to the Silver Saints arc of the manga. Netflix released an official trailer for the series last year, which you can watch below:

Netflix describes the animé’s story as such:

“Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya follows modern day adventures of young warriors called “Knights”, who are sworn protectors of the reincarnated Greek goddess Athena. Each Knights wears a powerful armor based on their chosen zodiac constellation, and are called Knights of the Zodiac. They aid Athena in her battle against powerful Olympian gods who are bent on destroying the humankind.”

Knights of the Zodiac got into controversy last year when it was announced that Andromeda Shun, one of the Saints, will be presented as a female character in Netflix’s adaptation. Producer Eugene Son (Avengers Assemble) has since taken to Twitter to explain that it was his decision to make Andromeda female. According to him, “Today the world has changed. Guys and girls working side-by-side is the default. We’re used to seeing it. Right or wrong, the audience could interpret an all-male team as us trying to make a statement about something.”

Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac will be animated by Toei Animation under the direction of Yoshiharu Ashino (CROSS ANGE Rondo of Angel and Dragon). Besides being the producer, Eugene Son is also the story editor and head writer. Character design will be done by Terumi Nishii (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable), while armor design will be done by Takashi Okazaki (Summer Wars).The CG remake of Saint Seiya is set for a summer 2019 release.
