Comic Book Creator Brian K. Vaughan to Pen Gundam Live-Action Hollywood Adaptation

The upcoming Hollywood live-action film for Gundam has just signed on comic book creator Brian K Vaughan to handle the movie’s screenplay, entertainment news website Deadline reports. Vaughan is best known for the Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina comic book series, and has been praised by Wired as “the greatest comic book visionary of the last five years”. He also served as a writer, story editor, and producer for seasons three to five of the US television series Lost. He is also credited for writing for some high-profile Marvel characters such as Spider Man and Captain America. Besides penning the screenplay, Vaughan will also serve as the executive producer of the Gundam Hollywood film.

The Hollywood live-action adaptation of the popular Japanese mecha icon will be helmed by Legendary Pictures’ Cale Boyter, who also produced the Pokemon: Detective Pikachu movie. Boyter will be supervising the film together with Sunrise’s creative team. It will be remembered that at the Anime Expo last July, he appeared with Bandai Namco Holdings president and representative director Mitsuaki Taguchi to announce the live-action film project.

In the “Gundam Franchise’s New Work Unveiling” event held last April, the Hollywood live-action film was revealed to be tentatively titled as Mobile Suit Gundam UC2. The panel described the upcoming movie as an “overseas drama format” and will take place in Universal Calendar 0104. The panel also indicated that the live-action movie is slated for release in 2022.
