Children of the Sea Movie Drops Trailer, Previews Music by Joe Hisaishi

The movie adaptation of Daisuke Igarashi’s manga Children of the Sea (Kaiju ni Kodomo) has just released a 20-second teaser trailer. The trailer also features a short preview on the music of Joe Hisaishi, who serves as composer for the film. Hisaishi is known for working on the musical scores of most Studio Ghiblii films, such as Porco Rosso and Princess Mononoke.

Viz Media has the rights to release Children of the Sea in English, and they describe the manga’s story as such:

When Ruka was younger, she saw a ghost in the water at the aquarium where her dad works. Now she feels drawn toward the aquarium and the two mysterious boys she meets there, Umi and Sora.

They were raised by dugongs and hear the same strange calls from the sea as she does.
Ruka’s dad and the other adults who work at the aquarium are only distantly aware of what the children are experiencing as they get caught up in the mystery of the worldwide disappearance of the oceans’ fish.

The movie’s official website also announced its main staff and cast: teen voice actors Mana Ashida and Hiiro Ishibashi will play Ruka Azumi and Sora, respectively. Actor Yosuke Kubozuka’s son Airu Kubozuka will be playing Umi. This will be the latter’s first-ever voice acting role.

Children of the Sea will be directed by Ayumu Watanabe, who has directed several Doraemon films as well as anime series such as Koi wa Ameagari no You Ni (Love is Like After the Rain). Keinichi Konishi, known for his work on 2003 anime film Tokyo Godfathers, is in charge of character design and is chief animation director as well. The movie will be produced by Studio 4°C. The movie is set for a June 7 release in Japan.
