It was recently confirmed that the total blockbuster gross of Love Live Sunshine: School Idol Movie Over the Rainbow in Japan has crossed the 1 billion yen mark. Mantan Web reports that the movie achieved this huge milestone on February 22, eight weeks since its release on January 4. Over the Rainbow was first reported to have sold 500,000 tickets in just 25 days.
The Love Live Sunshine movie joins two other anime films this year that have also crossed the 1 billion yen mark: Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel II. lost butterfly, and City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes.
As Over the Rainbow enters its ninth week in theaters, the official Twitter account of the Love Live franchise recently announced the bonus gift item to moviegoers this week. Fans who will be watching from March 1-7 will get an exclusive colored paper featuring an all-new illustration of all Aqours members drawn by anime character designer Yuhei Murota. In addition, special version papers with Aqours’ members’ signatures will be randomly distributed across all theaters, with at least one signed paper for each theater.
Love Live Sunshine: School Idol Movie Over the Rainbow serves as a film sequel to the end of the anime’s second season, which saw third year members Matsuura Kanan, Ohara Mari & Kurosawa Dia graduating from high school. As the younger members prepare to transfer to a new school, the third years suddenly go missing in their graduation trip. The movie then follows the rest of the Aqours members in looking for the third years, which lead them to Italy.
