Princess Mononoke was first released in Japan on 1997 and in the US on 1999. It went on to become a commercial and critical success, becoming the highest-grossing movie in its home country and the first animated film to win the highly-prestigious Japan Academy Prize Picture of the Year in 1998. It tells the story of warrior-prince Ashitaka who journeys to the west in search of a cure to a curse that has fallen on him. On his journey he stumbles upon the headstrong Lady Eboshi, her people in Iron Town, and their struggle with Princess Mononoke, a mysterious young girl who was raised by wolves who fights to save her forest home from the destructive ways of humans.
