The film officially premiered in the United States during last year’s Crunchyroll Expo in September. It officially premiered in Japan on August 17 last year at ranked #10 at the box office on tis opening weekend.
Based on the novel of the same name by Tomihiko Morimi, penguin highway is centered on a fourth grader named Aoyama and mysterious older woman who is dental assistant and Aoyama’s first crush. When a group of penguins sudden appear his quiet neighbor, it’s up to Aoyama to discover the reason for their appearance.
The original novel is licensed by manga and book publisher Yen Press.
penguin highway received the “Axis: The Satoshi Kon Award of Excellence in Animation” award for Best Animated Feature during Fantasia International Film Festival held in Montreal last July. It is also been nominated in the VFX-Japan Awards for the Animated Theatrical Film Category.
