A Solid Supernatural Romance: "Bloody Sweet"

Synopsis

Naerim has led a less than stellar life being a shaman’s daughter. From being heavily bullied to being an outcast at school, she has found little reprise outside of her life on the internet. One night while on a school camping trip, she is forced to join her group in exploring an abandoned building and ends up uncovering a young man in a closet. While her classmates run from the supposed corpse, Naerim soon discovers that the man is, in fact, a vampire named Fetechou. Due to her having injured herself and him having tasted her blood, the two end up forming a contract, and this is only the beginning of their story.

The Good

Naerim is the type of character that you can easily empathize and as the story progress, someone to root for. Her character development is on point and it’s nice to see that rather than a revenge story, it’s more of her growing past her struggles and her antagonists receiving their comeuppance. Really, just seeing the change in styles on her demeanor as the story progressed made for not only a good visual but also shows a good transition for her character in a way that is believable. In addition to this, the way she opens up to other people and learns to step out of her shell made for a good show of pacing with the plot.

More than the strong character development on Naerim’s side, her and Fetechou’s relationship dynamic and development made for the highlight of the series. It starts off as a tad silly with some good emotional backing but this ends up with the two forming a solid emotional foundation and not rushing into things. More than the two having romantic moments, the series takes more on the two being a support for the other. There are chemistry and sweetness between the two for sure but it only really shows in the second season of the series.

The Bad

During the first season of the series, the main problem was that it was fairly obvious how certain things would turn out, especially in terms of the first antagonist. With the second season, it seems that they rushed things a bit with the drama and the whole other vampires existing aspect. Actually, the main issue lied with Laszlo and Roxanna. They made for interesting antagonists initially but it seemed like the series didn’t flesh out their stories all that well. There was a clear backstory for both of them but it seemed to get muddled as the series went on. Other than this, there is the whole back and forth thing that Naerim and Fetechou went through regarding him becoming human and leaving but it wasn’t totally bad in hindsight.

Conclusion

This is a series that holds strong in terms of its emotional elements but could use some work in terms of its plot layout, mainly in the second season. As stated, there is a strong character and relationship development to be found with the series but the dramatic portions in line with the conflict. The villains were rather predictable in how they would turn out for the most and could have been better with more fleshed out stories. Overall though, this is an interesting supernatural story that handles its main characters well and has some good emotional moments.
