Different announcements were made at Anime NYC; one of them was of the lead English dub cast for the “Megalo Box” anime by Viz Media.
“Megalo Box” is a sci-fi sports series that was released in spring under the production of TMS Entertainment. The story of the series sets in a futuristic setting where licensed citizens live in a wealthy city while, on the outskirts of this city, there is a slum town where unlicensed citizens live in poverty. Junk Dog is a resident of the latter faction and spends his days as an underground fighter of Megalo Box, an evolution of boxing that utilizes mechanical limbs known as Gear to enhance the speed and power of its users.
While the young man has plenty of potential in him, due to the illegal nature of his participation, he is forced to make a living off of throwing matches as dictated by his boss Gansaku Nanbu. Everything changes, however when he ends up facing against Megalo Box champion Yuuri. Upon being soundly defeated, the champion left with a challenge: “If you’re serious about fighting me again, then fight your way up to me and my ring.”
This sparks a fire within Junk Dog and with some help, gains the identity of Joe and thus begins his journey to the top of Megalonia: a world-spanning tournament that will decide the strongest Megalo Boxer of them all.
For the English dub, the production will be under ADR director Ezra Weisz and is set to premiere on Adult Swim’s Toonami block on Saturday, December 8. As for the cast, it includes:
Kaiji Tang as Joe
Jason Marnocha as Coach Nanbu
Erica Mendez as Sachio
Lex Lang as Yuri
Erika Harlacher as Yukiko
“Megalo Box” was an anime made in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Ikki Kajiwara (pen name Asao Takamori) and Tetsuya Chiba’s “Ashita no Joe” manga. It premiered on April 5 and had a total of 13-episodes. The series was directed by You Moriyama and written by Katsuhiko Manabe.
