What We See so Far - "Blissful Land"

Synopsis

Set in Tibet during the eighteenth century, this is the tale of a thirteen-year-old male doctor-apprentice named Kang Shiva. Upon coming home from a day of herb collecting, the young man finds a bride and the party who was marrying were staying in his house. Belatedly, Kang learns that the bride Moshi-La will, in fact, be married to him and has come all the way from a foreign country.

The Good

The biggest thing that stands out in the series is in how it presents their way of life. From the details of their homes to designs of their clothes; while it doesn’t present a completely different culture it does present a look into a different sort of setting. It sets a simple and low-key tone that helps in presenting both the setting and the characters’ lives whom are not just nice but also fit the general tone that the series gives. As a protagonist, Kang does have his moments with healing people and relaying what he is learning. When it comes to his development with Moshi-La, it is slow but it there is a charm and sweetness to be found with the two. Other than this, it’s nice that different chapters feature different people and take a peek in their perspectives.

The Bad

Being such a simple series that doesn’t feature a whole lot other than the characters and how they live, it may not appeal to a lot of people. There isn’t any real plot flow being followed and it’s mainly different peeks into different times that Kang spends his day with Moshi-La and help people. The real standout low point of the series is that both Kang and Moshi-La are rather typical characters that don’t really have much on them that make them stand out other than their skills. Personality wise there isn’t much developed on them along with other aspects of the story.

Conclusion

The series has a charm to it, that’s for sure, but it feels like it could be more with the way that the characters and their relationship are developed. It’s got some interesting concept and the characters are sweet but being such a simple work, there aren’t many expectations to be placed on it. Overall it’s a series that clearly takes on the slice-of-life genre well enough and is worth at least one read.
