The “One Piece” franchise gains a new addition as at the end of the two-hour “One Piece: Episode of Skypiea”/“One Piece: Episode of Sorajima” anime special broadcast in Japan, a new film was revealed.

Set to release in summer 2019 in Japan, the film will be commemorating the TV anime’s 20th anniversary and will be the 14th film in the franchise. The last film of the franchise, “One Piece: Gold” opened in Japan in July 2016. It was directed by Hiroaki Miyamoto, who briefly worked as a director for a number of “One Piece” episodes. And written by Tsutomu Kuroiwa, the writer behind the “GANTZ: O” film.

The film featured the Straw Hat Crew having a new adventure set in the spectacular city of Gran Tesoro. As a city filled with riches, Luffy and his crew are drawn by dreams of hitting the jackpot. However, while the crew’s luck rises, something darker occurs behind the glittering shine of the city as there lies a powerful king whose deep pockets and deeper ambitions spell disaster for all.

Prior to this film, there were a number of film works that were released for the franchise. From the year 2000-2009, there was a new film released each year. Then in March 2011, the 30-minute “One Piece 3D: Mugiwara Chase” film was released and was then followed by the “One Piece Film Z” movie in December 2012.

On a different note, it has been reported that this year’s 39th issue of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine teased an “important announcement” to be revealed in the next issue. Other than this, it has been confirmed that the 90th volume of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga will ship on September 4. Along with this is the new Vivre Card: One Piece Zukan fanbook.

The “One Piece” franchise first began as a manga series that was written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda and released in July 1997. The series is currently running under the serialization of Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine and currently has around 90 volumes released. Other than the manga, anime series and films, the franchise has also had a trading card game and a number of video games released.
