My Brother's Husband Manga Receives Award at the 2018 Eisner Awards

At the Comic-con International: San Diego, the 2018 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards revealed its winners and one of them was Gengoroh Tagame’s “My Brother’s Husband” manga which won this year’s Best U.S. Edition of International Material Asia award.

For those who may not be familiar, “My Brother’s Husband” is a manga series that was created by Gengoroh Tagame. The series featured themes regarding homosexuality and family and was serialized by Futabasha in the magazine Monthly Action from November 2014 to May 2017.

The series had a total of 4 volumes and had an English release with Anne Ishii having translated the work. It was released in two-in-one omnibus editions by the American publisher Pantheon Books and the British publisher Blackfriars.

The story of the series tells the story of three people, stay-at-home father Yaichi, his daughter Kana, and Canadian Mike Flanagan, who married Yaichi’s estranged and recently deceased twin brother Ryōji. The series explores their relationship as well as deals with issues of homophobia and cultural differences.

In the awards, the series went against Jiro Taniguchi’s “Furari”, Satoru Noda’s “Golden Kamuy”, Moto Hagio’s “Otherworld Barbara”, and Junji Ito’s “Shiver: Junji Ito Selected Stories.” Another winner announced for the awards was Kodansha Comics’ 35th-anniversary edition of Katsuhiro Otomo’s “Akira” manga for the Best Archival Collection/Project-Comic Books award. The work also won the Best Publication Design award.

Other than winners, there were also nominees listed with the late Jiro Taniguchi having been nominated for Best Writer/Artist for “Furari and Louis Vuitton Travel Guide: Venice.” The work that did win the award “My Favorite Thing Is Monsters” by Emil Ferris.

Nominated for Best Publication for Teens (ages 13-17) were Robert Kondo and Dice Tsutsumi’s “The Dam Keeper” and the winner Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda’s Monstress. Last but not least, Dark Horse Comics’ release of Gou Tanabe’s H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Hound and Other Stories”, translated by Zack Davisson, received a nomination in the Best Adaptation from Another Medium category. The winner of the award was Damian Duffy and John Jennings’ adaptation of Octavia Butler’s “Kindred” novel.
