Coming in January 2019 is a new magical girl anime as the “Magical Girl Special Ops Asuka” a.k.a. “Mahō Shōjo Tokushūsen Asuka” series is confirmed for an anime adaptation.
Revealed via an official website that was launched for the series, a teaser visual and promotional video including an introduction from Kirara Asuka were also revealed along with staff details.
“Magical Girl Special Ops Asuka” is a magical girl/military seinen manga series written by Makoto Fukami and illustrated by Seigo Tokiya. It was in June 2015 that the manga began publication under the manga magazine Monthly Big Gangan. The series was also published by Square Enix and currently has around 7 volumes released with the 8th volume set to release in Japan on July 25. A special feature of the series that it had Naoya Tamura collaborating on the military setting.
The story of the series takes place in a world threatened by the sudden appearance of undead creatures. Luckily they were defeated by a group of young women blessed with powers from a mysterious source. However they do not remain defeated as three years later, they make their rise once more. Now a group known as the Magical Girl Special-Ops force has been formed consisting of five magical girls to defend the world.
Directing the series is Hideyo Yamamoto, who worked on the storyboard of “Bleach” and he will be directing at LIDEN FILMS. With him as the series composer is “Berserk’s” series composer Makoto Fukami and the creator of “School-Live!” Norimitsu Kaihō. Yoko Suzuki, who majorly worked as a key animator, will be designing the characters of the series. Taking charge of the composition is R.O.N, the composer behind the “Kuroko’s Basketball” series.
Only one cast member has been confirmed for the series so far and that is Aya Suzaki. She will be playing as the title character Asuka Ōtorii. Other than this role, the voice actress has played as Kaede Kayano in the science fiction series, “Assassination Classroom” and Mako Mankanshoku in the action magical girl series “Kill la Kill” series.
On another note, Seven Seas Entertainment, which licensed the manga series in English will be releasing the fourth compiled book volume on August 21.
