General Impression: Magical Girl Ore

Synopsis

Saki is a young girl who aims to become an idol and is in love with her best friend’s brother, Mohiro, a popular male idol. One day she encounters a yakuza which led to her shock, the revelation that her mother was a former magical girl and now the yakuza male, who is, in fact, the mascot behind recruiting her mother wants to recruit her.

While in her denial of the position, she witnesses Mohiro being kidnapped she rushes out to save him. In the end, she agrees to take on the contract of becoming a magical girl. However, rather than turning into a magical girl with a perky costume… she turns into a muscular man wearing a magical girl costume!?

First Impression

It was no question that things would be weird given the premise of the series, but somehow it works. The way that it pokes at the tropes of magical girls and shoujo works really sets up a solid comedy for the series. Other than the comedy, the music isn’t all that bad. The opening is rather fitting for the general tone of the series. The only downside for the episode is that with the whole gender change aspect, it may give an off point to the series. Overall there isn’t a whole lot of issues with the episode.

General Impression

Behind all the wackiness there’s different interesting twists and concepts that were tackled in the series. While the whole gender change as off, it opens a whole lot of interesting ideas, mainly in how the shipping would work. Really this is somehow a shoujo, shounen ai and shoujo ai all at the same time. And it isn’t even the main focus of the series. The comedy work is pretty predictable and it’s obvious the series is building up a surprise or predictable villain. When it comes to the comedy of the series, it really depends on the viewer on whether it is a flaw or not.

Conclusion

Reading the premise alone, you would think this is a mess of a series, but it actually works in terms of parody. The general execution pokes at a lot of cliches which is fun and it does have its moments of a solid story. There’s a whole lot of interesting points to explore with the series, to be honest. The only issues to be found so far is that there are more than a few predictable points and the comedy may not appeal to everyone
