Synopsis
Unoki-kun has been bullied ever since he was in elementary and has long developed a rather negative outlook on a lot of things. Entering into high school he finds himself confronted by top delinquent Toramaru-san who tells him “Be mine:”. While Unoki believed that the statement meant that he would become the delinquent’s errand boy though, that is not the case. The truth is that when Toramaru had confronted him, she was actually trying to confess her feelings, and now she thinks that the two of them are dating. Thus begins a tale of a relationship filled with misunderstandings and comedy.
First Read
The comedy and the character dynamics of the series are quite good, but it’s really Unoki’s character portrayal that brings out the series. He’s not the most striking character of the series true, though he does have an interesting design that’s usually meant for rougher characters. What makes him interesting as a character is that there is more shown to him than the coward and highly negative person he is shown to be.
Toramura-san is an interesting character in how her dynamic works with Unoki. There’s no shortage of her character type but seeing her dynamic with Unoki along with her perspective of their interactions is rather adorable. It’s a simple series that banks more on the dynamics of the characters and the humor it brings.
Second Read
With the progression of the series, there is a subtle development that works well with the flow of the story. It’s the kind of romance development where the characters learn to see more of the other that you can appreciate. Somehow this brings a surprisingly soft tone to the overall silliness of the series which is a pleasant surprise. The whole misunderstanding between the characters can get repetitive but the softer moments to make up for it. For the most part, the main flaw of the series is with the repetitiveness of the characters.
True, we do get a peek at other parts of their personalities and characters. However, it just seems whenever the characters meet or have scenarios, the general idea of the whole different perspectives remains the same. More than romance though, the series also brings a nice peek at characters’ friendship and families.
Conclusion
It’s a quirky shoujo that manages to slip in a tone of softness. If you take out the whole perspective concept this would be a typical shoujo and it can be repetitive. However, the series does have its moments. It does have a solid development and shows that it can be more at the moment. Basically, it’s a series that gives some good laughs and sweet moments. Though a little variation in character interactions would be nice
