Synopsis
The story begins with adventurer Dale one day discovering a little devil girl wasting away while out on a job in the forest. Deciding to help her, the adventurer takes her home and becomes her adoptive father. Though a devil she may be, Latina is more than adorable and Dale develops a quick and deep parental love for her. It does not change the fact however, that Latina holds much mystery with her past.
The Good
While the reader is first introduced Dale, Latina is really the star of the series. More than being a cute child character, the development that she undergoes is highly endearing. The way that she connects with different characters is just sweet. Added with how soft the tone of most of the series is and how steady the story flow is, there’s a lot of lovable moments to be found with the series. Outside of this though, it does give an interesting insight into Dale as an adventurer and how he was before he met Latina.
Latina and Dale aren’t the only characters who make the story interesting however as the side characters also present some interesting perspectives as well. Though they are rather simple characters at first, it’s nice to see some depth given to them throughout the series. Honestly, just seeing how the characters interact and learn from one another really makes for a compelling read as simple as most of it is.
The Bad
Dale does have some interesting looks into his background, but not so much in personality. Sure, he’s a great as a father figure and he has an interesting history, but a little exploration of his personality would be nice. There was the whole arc with him on a quest and Latina’s issue with the school, but it’s not much. Basically, he’s got an interesting background but not a lot in terms of personality.
On the note of the school arc, the drama that occurred in it was rather abrupt. The villain was quite obvious and the explosion that she had was rather off from what the story has shown so far. Really, there was a very little build-up to the drama. The only thing that redeemed it was that it showed more on Dale and had a rather heart-warming aftermath. It doesn’t change the fact that the arc could have been handled better in the build-up.
Conclusion
This is a fantasy/adventure tale that is a nice change of pace from the high-flying action of hero stories and such. This may be the first piece that has the elements of fantasy and adventure but takes an interesting theme of family and growth. Latina’s journey is more than a slice-of-life work however as we get to see interesting pieces to the mystery of her past and a good deal and well-done drama. What would make the series even better would be an exploration of Dale’s side of things outside of his doting over Latina and not just his background. Other than this, there was one slip from the series. As a whole, however, this is a sweet change for the line-up of fantasy/adventure stories.
