Sailor Moon Gets Turned into a Novel by Fairy Navigator Runa's Miyoko Ikeda

“Sailor Moon” officially gains a new installation as the franchise’s website announces a novel adaptation of the series to be done by “Fairy Navigator Runa” manga author Miyoko Ikeda.

Set to be released by Kodansha’s children’s literature label Aoitori Bunko, the first novel will be launched in June. The title of the novel is “Bishōji Senshi Sailor Moon 1 Erabareta Senshi” a..k.a. “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon 1: The Chosen Guardian”.

This is not the first time that the franchise has released a novel adaptation. Back in 1999 a series of novels were made and was followed by an English adaptation by Stuart Levy and Lianne Sentar. There were eight volumes in total and were published by Tokyopop’s Mixx Entertainment imprint until 2000.

“Sailor Moon”, which was originally known as “Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon” had its start in 1991 as a shōjo manga series by Naoko Takeuchi. It ran from 1991 to 1997 under the serialization of Nakayoshi and had a total of 18 tankobon volumes published with 52 chapters. Following the manga’s launch, an anime adaptation made its debut in 1992.

The anime ran until 1997 as well and had a total of 200 episodes. From the anime, the series grew into a franchise with a variety of adaptations. Included in these adaptations are three animated feature films, a television special, and three short films. Outside of the realm of anime and manga, the franchise also branched out to live-action works, video games and even table-top games.

The franchise has been noted by many as one of the, if not the top magical girl series to be released. It has gained praise for its art, characterization, and humor. The most recent occurrence for the series is that a sequel project was announced on January 25, 2017, for the 2014 anime adaptation, “Sailor Moon Crystal”.

“Sailor Moon” features the tale of Usagi Tsukino, a high school girl who ends up becoming, Sailor Moon, a soldier destined to save Earth from the forces of evil. Together with her comrades the Sailor Soldiers, they set out in search if a magical artifact known as the “Legendary Silver Crystal”
