Manga VS Anime Thoughts: Hakumei to Mikochi

Synopsis

Set in a world where there exist beings who are no more than a few inches high, this story takes focus on two roommates named Hakumei and Mikochi. Take a look at their lives as they go through different daily adventures from riding bugs to having leaves for umbrellas, all the while, meeting new people and learning their stories.

Manga Thoughts

The first noteworthy thing about the manga is that it seems to have more expressiveness in the world-building and characters. In addition to this, there is more thought and detail placed even into the littlest of parts. Basically, this is a great series to immerse yourself in a new world and learn about it. There’s a lot of interesting aspects in the series, and not just with the settings but the characters as well.

The main difference with the manga is that it goes deeper than the anime in exploration. Whether it be detail or story, there just seems to be more going on in the manga.

Anime Thoughts

The series brings a unique and rustic feel to it while introducing the viewer to a new world. From the art to the different details introduced, the series has a rather cute charm to it. Given that it is a slice-of-life work it does make sense, but there are downsides to this. While there is plenty of world exploration and interesting designs, the characters are one of the main issues with the series. It’s not to say that they are bad characters, but rather characters who were not given enough development.

Throughout the series, there have been different side characters that were introduced and given interesting stories too. On the other hand, the main characters’ stories didn’t seem as expanded, not on Mikochi’s part anyway. With Hakumei, we received interesting pieces to her past, but with Mikochi, the most we got was a general look at her character and one piece of her past involving her sister. While it’s not necessarily a large flaw, it still would have been nice to have seen the story revolve around the main characters a little more. Other than this, the series was a cute work with a lot of charming qualities to it and minor issues.

Conclusion

The most interesting thing about the series is that it explores this unique world of little people and presents different and interesting ideas on the daily lives of its people. The other interesting factor of the series is that there’s no specific spotlight on any of the characters. Rather it’s them working around each other and us seeing things from different perspectives. Between the manga and anime, there isn’t that much of a difference outside of detailing and length. As a slice-of-life work, it may seem like the story is somewhat disjointed but overall, this is a fun series to immerse yourself into.
