Anime has worked more than once in terms of promotional work and “Yuru Camp” continues to prove this true with the aftermath of its success resulting in a rise in popularity for winter camping.
Reports by camp-sites in Yamanashi Prefecture in Japan have stated that the winter season was busier than average due to fans looking to experience the “sacred sites” of the series. At the Koan Camping Ground in Minobu, winters are usually a slow season as, according to owner Hirofumi Akaike, the campsite is known for being especially chilly during that time frame.
Following the success of “Yuru Camp” the campsite has received three times as many tourists compared to an average winter season. The rise in popularity can also be attributed to fans of the series having caught sight of photos of the campsite on social media and creating a word-of-mouth advertising.
This resulted in fans from not only Japan by also Korea and Taiwan as well to visit the camp grounds all over Japan. Included among them is the Suimeiso campground in Ichikawamisato. Usually, there are no campers during the winter season but “Yuru Camp” has changed the season for the camp.
On another note, plans are being made to further leverage the popularity of “Yuru Camp” by the Yamanashi Tourism Promotion Organization, a public benefit foundation dedicated to promoting tourism in Yamanashi Prefecture, in promoting the merits of visiting Yamanashi.
The “Yuru Camp” anime aired from January 4 to March 22, 2018.With a total of 12 episodes, the series was directed by Yoshiaki Kyōgoku and written by Jin Tanaka.
The story of the series begins with Rin Shima, a high school girl, who unlike her peers, spends the winter season camping alone. From pitching her tent to gathering firewood, she has always done everything by herself, and has no plans of leaving her little solitary world. Things change for her however as one day she meets Nadeshiko Kagamihara.
Nadeshiko had planned on seeing the picturesque view of Mount Fuji but had failed due to having fallen asleep halfway. While their introduction was less than smooth, the two girls end up sharing cups of ramen and conversing by the campfire. As Nadeshiko is picked up by her sister, an unlikely friendship is formed between the two as Nadeshiko gains an interest in camping.
