General Impression: Miira no Kaikata

Synopsis

Sora Kashiwagi was a simple high school boy who lived independently with his aunt. One day he receives a package from his father and fears the worst as previous gifts from his self-proclaimed “adventurer” father left a less than pleasant impression given how they ranged from cursed items to killer spirits. He fears worsen when the package reveals a large coffin, but when it opens, he finds… a mummy no bigger than his hand?!

First Impression

The series gave a rather solid introduction in terms of the plot and characters. When first introduced to the mummy character, you wouldn’t think much on him other than being rather adorable. The way that the episode portrayed Mii-kun’s different aspects such as how he seems to be able to absorb water and bark makes for some interesting play on the character on the episode’s part. For the most part the characters introduced held a charm to them and while the episode was rather lowkey for the most part and didn’t have much to it outside the characters’ portrayal, there was a potential shown for a nice light-hearted series.

General Impression

What started off as a series that seemed like it would be a simple and light-hearted work involving supernatural characters turned cute ended up being a series that had some actual depth to it. For one thing, the series did some solid work in foreshadowing and for another is on how well they worked the dynamics of the characters. Sure, there was some parts that seemed rushed when it came to the bond between the teens and their respective creature but for the most part, there was a good mix of sweet and heartfelt moments.

On that note, you would think that out of everyone, Sora and Mii-kun would have the most interesting relationship development, but no, instead the series slips in a bit of a surprise by having Tazuki and Conny being the ones with the most interesting and layered relationship. While Sora and Mii-kun have a sweet relationship along with the others, Tazuki and Conny have a bittersweet note to them that helped in adding to the depth of the series.

While the build-up between the characters was well-done however, it feels that for the most part, a lot for the story was dragged out so to make a bigger impact in the end. It’s not a bad thing but it would have been nice to see a solid storyline to the series. Other than this, there aren’t any real issues to be found with the series other than it could worked out its panning better along with some transition scenes.

Conclusion

This is a series that takes on a different look into the supernatural realm in the cutest and most heartfelt way. Most often when it comes to anime taking on supernatural creatures, they are designed in a way that plays on the eyes. Here, the designs of the creatures not only bring something new to the table but presents a new dynamic under this genre. Without being too repetitive, here’s the general gist of the series. It has a cute look, a solid relationship development, good comedy and overall presents a light-hearted supernatural series with a good deal of depth to it.
