At the Dengeki Game Festival 2018, an announcement was made at the “Dengeki Bunko 25th Anniversary & New Work Unveiling Stage” event for a new anime adaptation. Said anime adaptation is for author Kouhei Kadono and illustrator Kouji Ogata’s “Boogiepop wa Warawanai” a.k.a. “Boogiepop and Others” light novel.
Starting off as light novel series under speculative fiction genre, “Boogiepop and Others” first released in 1998 and was published under MediaWorks before gaining a manga adaptation in 1999 under Dengeki. Prior to the anime adaptation set for this year, the series had a previous anime adaptation released by Madhouse in 2000.
Other than this the series had gained a live-action film in March 2000 and during the course of its run, the series had won the fourth Dengeki Game Novel Contest.
Set in an unnamed Japanese city, the story takes focus on five students at Shinyo Academy and an urban legend. A legend that children tell one another of “Boogiepop”, a shinigami that can release people from the pain they may be suffering. This “Angel of Death” is no mere legend however, as Boogiepop is in fact real.
The story begins with a case of disappearing female students, all of them from Shinyo Academy. While the authorities and faculty assume that it is a simple case of runaways, Nagi Kirima knows better. There is something foul afoot and it may just involve Boogiepop, or perhaps something more sinister.
Directing the adaptation is Shingo Natsume, the director behind the popular action series “One Punch Man” and both seasons “Space Dandy.” With him to work on the series scripts is Tomohiro Suzuki who also worked on the “One Punch Man” series. Working on the character designs is Hidehiko Sawada who prior to this majorly worked as a key animator for a variety of series including “One Punch Man.”
As for the cast, Aoi Yuuki, who is known to have played the role of Madoka Kaname in “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” will be taking on the role of Touka Miyashita, a.k.a. Boogiepop. With her to play the role of Nagi Kirima is Saori Ōnishi, the voice behind Kuro in “Restaurant to Another World.”
On another note, an official website and Twitter account has been opened for the upcoming series.
