38th ‘Doremon’ Film Conquers the Japanese Box Office with 843 Million Yen!

The 38th animated movie of the Doraemon franchise titled Eiga Doraemon: Nobita no Takarajima (Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Treasure Island) opened last weekend in 369 theaters in Japan.

It conquered the Japanese box office on its opening weekend with 717,000 tickets sold woth 843,148,500 yen (around 8 million USD). It earned 22% more than the first weekend of its previous animated film Eiga Doraemon: Nobita no Nankyoku Kachi Kochi Daibōken. Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Treasure Island sold more tickets in its first weekend than Disney’s Black Panther film (premiered in Japan on March) which which ranked at #2 for two days.

This latest film is inspired by the classic novel Teasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson as Doraemon, Nobita, Gian, Shizuka, and Suneo set out an epic adventure in the Carribean Sea.

“Doraemon” is one of the longest running franchises in the anime/manga community. It began in 1969 with the manga series written and illustrated by Fujiko F. Fujio. Over time the series grew with a variety of manga, anime, and plenty of merchandise to go around.
