A Fun Classic Story: Yome ga Kore na mon de.

Synopsis

This is the daily life story of a simple businessman and his alien.

The Good

The biggest highlight of the series lies in the creativity of the aliens’ designs and their details. Whether it be on how the wife manages her disguise to parts of the alien culture, this aspect of the series brought a highly refreshing feel to it. Even with a highly crowded scene, it’s nice to see that the series takes note of the littlest of details and having certain scenes look livelier and makes for some fun visuals.

Another highlight of the series is the way that it handles its tropes. For those who are familiar with some classic romance/comedy tropes, there is the whole “rival” trope that goes on here. Now why the quotation marks? When it comes to this trope, it can personally be rather annoying given that it’s meant to emphasize on the ladies fighting over the guy and the guy being tested with some curvy and flirtatious woman. Here not only do we get a male husband who turned the trope over its head but generally he’s just a great character.

He’s not by any means this amazingly strong character but his charm mainly lies in how he just handles all the craziness that comes with having an alien family. Honestly, all of the characters have a charm to them but he had the most impactful. Basically, the way that the series handles the family dynamics here leaves a big smile for this writer.

The Bad

There are a good number of tropes to be found in the series since this was published during a time when these tropes weren’t as overused as a lot of them are today. The main flaw that can be said against the series is that there is no solid storyline to it. Sure enough, there are portions of the series that seem like short arcs but as a whole, it just seems like the series is but a bunch of slice-of-life stories tied together by a loose string of ecchi comedy and hijinks of them trying to hide the wife’s identity as a secret.

Other than this, it just seems that the latter half of the series was rushed in order to tie everything together and bring in the time skip ending. While this part of the series isn’t the worst, it’s just a part of the series’ issues that could have been worked on. Still, there are no high issues to be noted other than those that you can pretty much ignore given the positive aspects of the series.

Conclusion

As a simple comedy series that takes on the concept of a normal guy with an alien wife and child, it does great. The creativity and design of the aliens and their abilities, technology etc. brings a unique look for the series. While there are the classic tropes to be found in the manga, the way that the series handled them makes for a good highlight. What makes this work though is the characters, mainly the human husband Nobuo. Basically, this is a series that’s got a good deal of charm and is a pretty great series to read if you’re looking for something new and without the whole tropes that have the romance dancing all over the place.
