New Manga Impression:Ojisama to Neko

Synopsis

This is the story of a cat, an old man, and the life of companionship that they begin together.

The Good

There are a handful of stories to be found on people bonding with cats, but this is a nice little story that takes on something new and holds a lot of potential for heart warming moments given the realism of the concept. When it comes cat and human stories, the feline character is either an aloof type or one that helps the human and the comedy of the story. Having a rather expressive feline character is a nice change for the series.

In addition to a difference in portrayal, the feline character has a rather nice design to him as well and holds a cute aspect to him. The same goes for the human character who also holds a nice design to him as well. There’s just something about middle aged characters and the way he is designed just adds for a wholesome touch to the story seeing as he is the one adopting the feline character.

Basically, the realism of the concept, the design of the characters and the overall expressiveness of the feline character makes for a sweet story with clearly many heart warming moments to come, especially for cat lovers.

The Bad

Here’s the thing with this work, it is short, and by short, it means EXTREMELY short, like, less than ten pages short and for some people, that can be rather lacking for a manga, even if it is a light type of work. Then there is the design of the cat, sure, he does have a rather cute look to him but for the most part, like the other cats that were shown, he looks more like a large plush toy. In hindsight though, these are rather small issues to be found with the manga and is far too short to give a full and concrete judge over it.

Conclusion

While short, there is a lot of potential to be found with the series, especially with the overall portrayal and expressiveness of the feline character. The realism of the story adds a nice touch and the fact that the human character is a middle-aged to elder character rather than a young character is a nice change from the usual. Overall, there is a clear amount of heart warming moments to look forward to with the series and while short, is something nice to check out to lift the spirits.
