A November 15, 2019 Schedule is Set for Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog Film

The release date of Paramount Pictures’ ‘’Sonic the Hedgehog” film is confirmed by Hollywood Reporter and it’s on November 15, 2019.

News of the video game franchise gaining a new film project first came out in 2014. It was described as a hybrid computer-animated and live-action feature film project by Sony and Marza Animation Planet. Sony Pictures Entertainment however, as announced in February 2016 by Sega Sammy Holdings president and CEO Hajime Satomi, will be handling the plans for the film. It was in October that Paramount Pictures had acquired the rights to develop the film.

Not much details have been released on the production of the film, but what has been confirmed six key staff members. Included among them is Jeff Fowler who will be making his directorial debut, with Tim Miller who worked on the “Deadpool” film, and Toby Ascher as the executive producers. Then there Neal Moritz, known for his work in the “Fast and Furious” franchise who will be working with Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons as co-producers.

On another note, the update of the film also notes that the film will use “a mix of live action and CGI to bring the character to life.” Most recently, the franchise has released its latest games “Sonic Forces” for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in November.

“Sonic the Hedgehog” first made his debut in 1991 with a platform game featuring the iconic blue hedgehog and his allies’ attempting to save the world from various threats, primarily the evil genius Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik. From the game came the development of multiple sequels which not only turned the speedy protagonist into an iconic figure in the video game verse but also had his games turn into a video game franchise. As for its developer Sega it became a leading video game company during the 16-bit era in the early to mid 1990s.

In the course of its run, other variations of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” game has expanded the series into various other genre and sub-series, such as “Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games” and the “Sonic Boom” series. For sales, the game series has sold over 80 million physical copies of games, and over 350 million units when combining packaged game software with mobile phone downloads by 2016.

More than games though, the franchise has managed to branch out to cartoons, anime, and a long-running comic book series, recognized as the longest running based on a video game by Guinness World Records.
