Synopsis
Everyone knows the tale of Snow White and the twists that have been done to it, but what about the story on the Evil Queen? Well in this case an Evil King; but don’t let him hear you call him that, for he much prefers being called “Queen” especially with his love for beautiful things. One day when questioning his magic mirror on who’s the most beautiful in the land, like the story the mirror responds with Snow White. The “Queen” is angered at first as expected but upon seeing the image of the lovely girl, rather than wanting to kill her he has quite the unexpected reaction.
The Good
The first time that you look at the cover of the manga, you can’t help but think that it’s just another twist to a fairy tale story with a different kind of Snow White and Prince, but nope, it’s more than that and different than any other fairy tale twist story that this writer has ever encountered. The first thing that will catch a reader’s eye is that the story doesn’t take focus on the lovely princess but rather the “Evil Queen” of this fairy tale. Or rather in this case, a tyrant king who likes all things beautiful.
And that’s the hook right there. Oh sure, a funny royal character has been done before, but as a main character who likes beautiful things to the point of willing to wear heels and dresses? Now that’s something worth reading on. Then there is also the fact that rather than wanting to kill Snow White, this royal character falls in love with her; that just adds on another point for the manga. Just everything about this manga has something new and different to give in the fairy tale spectrum and is overall very refreshing.
The Bad
For one thing, the personality of the “Queen” may not appeal to some people, especially with the whole heel thing. Then there is the Snow White for this story who was introduced in only one page, and to be honest, in this writer’s opinion, her design could have been done better. It was cute yes, but it really didn’t give a pop that it could have. If she also had a difference in personality to add to the story, then that may redeem her. Other than this, as always, a manga’s first chapter is reserved on a bad impression for the rest of the manga.
Conclusion
It’s different, it’s funny and the fact that the main character is not only usually the villain but holds a pretty enjoyable quirk to him makes the chapter. There are some general points in the chapter but for the most part the manga is interesting in that the male character is different from the usual. It would have been nice though if there was more shown on Snow White other than her image though.
