Synopsis
Takuma Ban was a simple young man who had two goals, to become a farmer and to find a wife using his cow Meari. Upon entering into Tokyo and jumping over a school fence with Meari on his back, he meets Yuki Samejima. The minute he meets her he decides that she would make the perfect bride and proposes to her then and there. While in shock Yuki’s older brother Ranmaru gets wind of the news and heavily opposes to the point of challenging Ban to a duel. Add to the fact that Ban is trying to escape from certain family issues and we have ourselves quite the wacky love story.
The Good
The story for one thing, is not only original but also cute and funny in many aspects. The characters are interesting and the way that the art flowed for different action scenes was very smooth in terms of transition. On the note of the characters, the general portrayal of them is highly interesting in that they seem to be an interesting mix of maturity and typical teenage behaviors. In terms of comedy, there is a lot to be found, and most of it is the classic slapstick humor that actually doesn’t make the viewer feel bad for the other party for once. The way that the story utilized a cow of all things for comedy was well done.
For the most part however, the story, characters and humor make for a charming work. The personal favorite part of the story for this writer however is in the epilogue, once the pair is married and have a child. The fact that the story holds a side story involving Yuki’s brother, his own relationship mixed in with an emotional exploration gives an added touch to the story.
The Bad
Rushed, there is no other word to describe the story. There was a relatively good introduction and then it seemed as if everything turned to chaos starting with the Ban being chased by his family to Yuki’s brother challenging him. It just seemed that the arcs melded together and ended up as quite the clutter in the end. Not only was there not enough room for a proper relationship between the main characters but it seemed as if the resolution of everything came about way too easy and highly rushed amongst everything.
It seems as if once we learn one aspect the story quickly moves onto another aspect for the story. In result of this the characters, while fun and charming in their own way, comes short in different aspects such as development, relationships and backstory. The story just seemed to branch out at different points and the ending up resolving itself far too fast. Simply put, the story held charm but too many holes and shortcomings in the end.
Conclusion
There are many charming points to be found with the story, from its concept, to its characters and comedy. However, in terms of development and plot building, there is much left to be desired. While there was charm in terms of its emotional work and comedy, the overall story just seemed all over the place given that there wasn’t much exploration given to Ban and his story when the focus was mainly on him achieving his goals of marrying Yuki. In the end though, it’s not the worst of stories given how much charm it holds.
