Starting in the next issue of Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine, the mystery series, “Detective Conan” will be taking a break. This hiatus has been announced as creator Gosho Aoyama will be undergoing medical treatment and be given time to “recharge.”
When the third and fourth combined 2018 issue of Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine released the news, it was also revealed that the upcoming issue will be featuring
a handwritten message from Aoyama for the announcement. In the message, he joked that he may have overdone things with his work on recent manga and anime projects. In addition to this, Aoyama also joked in his message that with the hiatus up he may use the hiatus to begin playing the Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp mobile game.
This is not the first time that the series has entered into a hiatus however as most recently, the series had just returned from a previous hiatus on November 29 and published the second chapter in the manga’s new arc in the first 2018 issue of the magazine. It was in October in the 45th issue of the magazine that the hiatus was announced and at the time is was due to Aoyama needing to take a break in order to conduct research.
“Detective Conan” is one of the longest running manga today, having been released in 1994. Serialized by Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday, the series currently has around 93 volumes. It is also the first series of the magazine to have reached a publication of 1,000 chapters. The anime adaptation was released in January 1996 and is currently running with nearly 900 episodes.
Most recently the franchise has released its 21st film “Meitantei Conan Kara Kurenai no Love Letter” (Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter) on April 15 and it had earned the highest opening weekend record for the franchise. Coming to Japan on April 13 is the 22nd film of the franchise “Meitantei Conan Zero no Shikkōnin” (Detective Conan: Zero’s Executioner).
The story of the series tells of Shinichi Kudo, a prominent high school detective recognized as a genius in the field. After following a suspicious pair, he ends up being poisoned and is shrunk into a child. Now together with detective Kogoro Mori and his daughter Ran, Conan helps the police solve difficult mysteries.
