Fans both new and old of the “Neko Atsume” app will be having a new way to enjoy the game in the next year. From the Android/iOS the cat-collecting game will be heading for VR.
To be known as “Neko Atsume VR”, the news was officially revealed on Tuesday at the PlayStation press conference at Tokyo Game Show by Sony. Originally released on October 20, 2014, the game developed by Hit-Point Co.,Ltd. has grown in popularity to the point of reaching over 19 million downloads worldwide.
For those who may not be familiar with the game, the gameplay and story are quite simple. The player is set as in a simple backyard where they are to purchase and lay out different food, toys and furniture in order to attract different cats and take photos of them.
Once they capture a photo of a cat, the photo will be saved in an album which provide information on the feline, along with mementos and gifts from them. Those fish, which can either be silver or gold are actually the currency used for the player to buy new items. The tricky thing about this game however, is to find just the right toy to attract certain cats and capture them on camera.
Another feature of the game is that when the player earns enough fish, they will be able to get an extension into the house and if they want to be a little creative with their setting they have the option to change into seven different styles: Original, Zen, Rustic, Modern, Western, Sugary, or Cafe.
The game’s popular was so high that on April 8, a live-action film was created titled “Neko Atsume no Ie” a.k.a. “Neko Atsume’s Home” and released in Japan. Telling the tale of Masaru Sakumoto a novelist who has found himself in a professional rut. However, upon moving to the country, he may have found something as he slowly begins to befriends the different local cats.
Directed by Masatoshi Kurakata with Yuuji Nagamori as the screenplay writer, the film later received a screening at the Japan Society’s Japan Cuts: Festival of New Japanese Film event in New York City held on July 16.
