A Rarely Seen Type: Shiawase Gohan - Maki to Hanazawa

Synopsis

This is the tale of a couple comprising of snappy and catty male named Maki and a sweet and cute male Hanazawa, this is their comedic but sweet tale together with their rabbit Pyon.

The Good

This is one of the rare BL stories that presents an actual happy and sweet established relationship between the main characters without an arc of drama or heartbreak to lead up to it. The portrayal of the characters are both sweet and comedic in equal parts given how the artist portrays their actions and expressions. On the note of portrayals, the art is also a pleasant visual for a reader and doesn’t seem as overly generic as majority of manga seem to be. The plot of an already established relationship mixed in with the simple enjoyment of having a meal together with someone you care about is a heartwarming piece and overall the art, characters and plot all tie well together to create a sweet and fun little work.

The Bad

The art is a little rough around the edges and could have been better in certain parts such as the background details and other little details that if you see it, it’s there. In the latest chapter of the series the overall tone took a highly different turn to the point that I thought that the manga was shifting to a completely different genre before it tied things up in the end. A better premise could have been given more to the characters and their relationship, though sweet it may be. The characters as well in terms of types are the ones you see everywhere in this genre and so they can come off as a little predictable in certain scenes. Overall, little details in art could have been better, more premise would have been good, the characters are not all that new in terms of type and the flow’s shift would leave a reader off kilter if not for the latest chapter.

Conclusion

It’s a rarely seen type of BL work with good art, endearing characters and well-done execution. If you’re looking for a piece with a sweet relationship between two male characters done will mixed in with a dash of drama in the later chapters then this is the work for you. In a personal opinion, all has been needed to be said in the prior sections of this article and if you wish to learn more than read the manga, it is a truly sweet piece though do expect some drama at least.
