'Tokyo Ghoul' Live-Action Movie Premieres in the Japan Box Office at #5!

The live-action adaptation of the Sui Ishida’s popular manga series Tokyo Ghoul has already premiered in Japan. In just its first weekend screening, it has already topped the Japanese Box Office charts at #5 which is just behind the live-action movie adaptation of Gintama at #4 but ahead of Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You! that dropped to #6 this week.

The film is directed by Kentaro Hagiwara while Masataka Kubota played the leading role of Kaneki Ken in this adaptation. Kubota’s known roles can be found in the live-action Death Note movie, the television series Photo Braver, and Mars.

Tokyo Ghoul is a Japanese manga created by Sui Ishida and was first launched in the Weekly Young Jump from 2011 to 2014 with a total of 14 volumes. Due to the manga’s continuous success, it paved way for another manga sequel Tokyo Ghoul: re which is ongoing, and a spin-off prequel manga Tokyo Ghoul [Jack] which was published digitally from August 2013 to October 2013.

To give you a little background about the manga, it is a dark fantasy series in which Ghouls live in the human world like normal people except for the fact that they feed on human flesh. Kaneki Ken was excited to have a date with Rize which only ended up bad since Rize was only interested on his body and eat it. After a morally questionable rescue, Kaneki can transform himself into a half-Ghoul half-human individual. The manga follows his survival in a violent and dark world infested with Ghouls that live among us.
