Makoto Shinkai’s ‘your name’ Earns Over 25 Billion Yen in Japan!

It seems that Makoto Shinkai has once again hit another gross record—as of Sunday, Kimi no na wa or your name. has officially earned a total of 25.03 billion yen (around 354,526,712 USD)! Its total gross sales in the Japanese box office is only just below Disney’s smash hit animated musical film Frozen which earned 25.5 billion yen.

According Box Office Mojo, the movie’s screenings in Canada and the United States have earned massively earning an estimate of US$354,526,712 in these two regions alone.

The movie has officially taken the entire world by storm surpassing Studio Ghibli’s gross sales of its animation masterpiece Spirited Away. In US and Canada, it was screened in over 200 theaters where the dialogue and songs were dubbed into English language. RADWIMPS was responsible for the English version of its theme songs.

Kimi no na wa officially premiered in Japan last August and was received massively positive on its opening date alone. Due to the immense hype and demand, it was screened in over 92 countries and territories, conquering a majority of the box office charts. The movie is now the second highest grossing anime film worldwide, and the fourth highest-grossing film of all time in Japan. Currently, the movie is still being screened in some theaters in Japan.

Aside from the movie screenings, your name. also expanded its franchise by offering visitors in Japan a tour to some of the places being featured in the film, a your name.-themed café bus, a manga, and so on.

Although there are upcoming anime films that will premiere soon, no movie production can beat the magic and devotion that Shinkai has placed on your name.. With this new gross record, we’re pretty much going to expect more from this movie franchise in the near future.
