First Episode Impression: Cleanliness Boy! Aoyama-kun

Synopsis

This is the tale of Aoyama, a soccer player so talented that he has earned a spot on the 16-under team of Japan. But with all his skills for the sport, he has one problem, he is an extreme germaphobe. Whether it be throwing the ball or celebrating a win with his teammates, Aoyama will do whatever it takes not to get dirty. Even going as far as to wear gloves if he is made to throw the ball. Now in a new high school and team, how will things turn out?

The Good

When it comes to anime, the execution of its plot is what either makes or breaks the series as a whole. Starting off with a strong introduction, the episode did very well in terms of showing the story rather than telling the story like many anime series with narrations or monologues from the main character. The animation and art is quite smooth and at certain moments seems almost cinematic with slow motion scenes and difference in angling. The comedy as well was executed well with the shift in styles and timeliness.

The same can be said for the portrayal of characters as with simple scenes and little moments in the background, the viewers are introduced to their unique personalities. Overall, in terms of animation, art, execution and comedy, the first episode established a good framework for the rest of the series.

The Bad

For many sports anime, a striking point which makes them so memorable is its themes and soundtrack. However, the opening theme is meant to strike the viewer or give them a shot of adrenalin to hype them up for the episode. With the opening theme for the episode, the soft rock didn’t seem to strike all that will even if at certain points it matched with the dramatic image story telling it was telling. If you look closely enough, the animation may not appeal to the viewer. As for the characters, for a viewer who may not be used to the eccentric characters found in sports series, the characters may come off as hit or miss with them.

So, in terms of music and matters of character impressions, it is either a hit or miss with the viewer. With a lack of overall impact in terms of the opening, the viewer can either ignore it or base off from it. The characters for those who are fond of sports anime may not find them all that surprising and may even enjoy them. But for new viewers, it may not hit the mark for them.

Conclusion

For the first episode of the series it left a very good impression even with slight hit/miss moments here and there. As stated, the art, animation, execution and comedy are all good points to look forward to for the rest of the series. More anime these days seem to take on a “show not tell” approach in terms of plot and it brings an interesting turn for the viewer, making them try to figure out what might happen next or how the characters may react. So if you’re looking for an interesting sports anime that takes a new turn with its protagonist and their passion for the sport with some good animation and comedy, this is the anime to follow.
