For any 90s anime fan, you have probably heard of the adventures and misadventures of Lupin the Third. Good news! He will return in his 5th anime series and production is now in the works. This has been officially announced by Telecom Animation Film and TMS during the Japan Expo in Paris on Thursday.
Lupin III will travel to France which is the home of his grandfather and namesake, Arsène Lupin (the master thief character of Maurice Leblanc). The announcement of the new anime comes with an official visual of the characters in Mont Saint-Michel. Lupin III was renamed to Edgar but France this time will be using his original name upon the release of the new series.
Based on the manga of the same name, Lupin III centers on the many escapades of the titular thief. Aside from the four anime series, the franchise also expanded into anime movies as well as in live action adaptations.
The fourth anime series of the franchise titled Lupin III: Part IV was the first anime in the franchise aired in three decades. The anime series aired in October 2015 just after the Italian television premiere of Lupin III – L’avventura Italiana in August 2015. The series is centered on Lupin his 20s set in the locations of San Marino and Italy. The memorable part of this series was him wearing a blue jacket instead of his iconic red one.
Lupin III: Part V was officially streamed online via Crunchyroll in January 2016 which then followed by a US television premiere in Adult Swim’s Toonami block in the same year (dubbed in English. TMS Entertainment premiered the special titled Lupin III Italian Game during the Anime Expo weekend. The special was first aired in Japan on January 8, 2016.
