Characters Turn to Teens in July in New Shonen Ashibe Manga

From children to teens, the vintage manga from 1988, “Shounen Ashibe” will be having a new manga series to be launched in the next issue as announced in this year’s August issue of Futabasha’s Monthly Action magazine announced on Saturday.

Working on this new series is none other than the creator of the franchise herself, Hiromi Miroshita as the writer. Along with her is the artist Shohei, whom is recognized from having worked on boys-love manga. As a sneak peek on what to expect, Miroshita has released a preview image of the series on Twitter.

The tale of the original series tells of an elementary boy named Ashibe Ashiya and his adventures with the baby spotted seal named Goma-chan.

For the new series, which is to be titled, “Seishounen Ashibe”, the story will be following Ashibe’s life as a first year high school student alongside his friend Sugao.

“Shounen Ashibe” is a slice of life comedy created by Hiromi Miroshita, an artist who has also created the comedy series “Osaka Hamlet” in 2006. As stated the series was first published in 1988 and was serialized by Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump magazine. It ran for a total of 8 volumes before ending on 1994.

During the publication of the series though, an anime adaptation was created from it in 1991 which ran for around 37 episodes and gained a second season in 1992. In 2000, Hiromi created a manga sequel for the series entitled “ComaGoma” which was serialized by the same magazine and it ran until 2004.

Most recently a new anime series was inspired by the manga in April, titled, “Shōnen Ashibe GO! GO! Goma-chan” which is currently having a second season and has in turn inspired a manga series created by Morishita and Junko Ogino.

The staff for the most recent anime adaptation comprise of the following:

Director: Kondou, Nobuhiro
Theme Song Performance: Lon
Series Composition: Takeuchi, Toshimitsu
Editor: Tan, Ayako

As for the cast, they comprise of:

Nao Tōyama as Goma-chan and Sugao
