A new promotional video presenting the CG animation style for the upcoming anime series “Land of the Lustrous” a.k.a. “Houseki no Kuni” is out and streaming on the official website as of Friday.
“Land of the Lustrous” is a series that is being serialized by Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine, was first launched in 2012 and is a creation of Haruko Ichikawa. Kondansha’s Afternoon line of magazines is recognized to have spawned various popular manga series including “Oh my Goddess” and “Big Windup!”
Prior to this production, the series garnered an animated promotional video in 2013 which was directed by Akiyo Hoyashi with Ichikawa overseeing the storyboard process and Aya Kanou designing the characters.
Currently the 7th volume of the series is under publication and will be released on May 23. In addition to this, there are plans being made of the first volume of the series being released in English this summer.
The story for the series tells of an alternate distant future where new beings called “houseki” or gems have risen. There are 28 gems whom have appeared and all of them have gone into battle “tsukijin” (moon people), beings whom wish to turn the gems into decorations. For each gem, they hold a role in battle such as fighter or medic.
A young gem named Phos longs to take part of the battle yet held no assignment for herself until she is given the offer to edit a natural history by Kongo, a gem manager.
Directing the CG fantasy series is Takehiko Kyogoku, the director to both the “Love Live! School idol project” and “GATE” anime series. He will be working on the production at the Orange CG animation studio, which is recognized for having worked on the digital painting of many “Detective Conan” and “Doreaemon” films.
Toshiya Ono, who worked on the series composition of “Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga:” and “Gatchaman Crowds” is taking on the scripts of the series. Working on the designs of the character is Asako Nishida, the character designer for the mecha series “Active Raid Second” and supernatural series, “Vampire Knight Guilty.”
There is no confirmed date on when the series will be making its debut but it is confirmed that it will be arriving around October of this year.
