Artist Aneko Yusagi’s fantasy light novel series, “The Rising of the Shield Hero” a.k.a. “Tate no Yūsha no Nariagari” is officially confirmed to have an anime adaptation in the works via a tweet released by the official Twitter account of Osada, Shizuoka branch of the Yoshimi Books store depicting a copy of the promotional flyers from MF Books, the light novel label of Kadokawa’s brand company Media Factory that publishes the series.
The flyer states that on July 1 there will be a showing of a promotional video for the anime at the Anime Expo and at the back of the flyer is a feature on a spinoff story for the novels to mark the anime announcement.
The series first began as a web comic created by Aneko Yusagi in 2013 and has since been published Media Factory with illustrations by Minami Seira. Currently there are 17 volumes of the series that have been released; the most recent one having been just released on March 21 with a confirmation that the 18th volume would be released on July 25.
In 2014 the series was adapted into a manga by Aiya Kyū and published by Media Factory. On July 23, the sixth volume of the series was released. During this publication, both novel and manga were licensed by One Peace Books and were published in North American starting in September 2015. Most recently One Peace Books has been releasing the novel series in English and on May 16 they released a 6th volume.
The tale of the series tells of an uncharismatic otaku named Naofumi Iwatani who goes through his daily life by playing games and reading manga. One day he is suddenly summoned to another world, but he is not along. He along with three other people have been called to become four heroes and wielders of legendary weapons in order to save the world from a prophecy of destruction. For Naofumi, he gains the title of Shield Hero.
Perceived as the weakest of the heroes Naofumi soon finds himself not only penniless but betrayed as well. But all is not lost and not all is at it seems as Naofumi, with only his shield by his side, embarks on a journey to rise up and earn the right to his title and save the world.
