A Look Into Bonjour Sweet Love Patissier

Synopsis

Enter into a world of lovely sweets and lovely males through the eyes of a young girl named Sayuri Haruno. Her dream is to become a pastry chef and to attain this dream she enrolls in the prestigious Fleurir Confectionary Academy. Upon entering she meets four different but talented males; the ambitious Ryou Kouzuki, the princely, Mitsuki Aoi, the charming Gilbert Hanafusa and the silently passionate Yoshinosuke Suzumi. Thus begins the sweet and challenging journey to her dream while facing the charms of these four males.

The Good

The art is a wonderful treat for the eyes and it’s not just with the characters. From the opening to the ending, you can see the work done into the details, especially with the confections, seeing as it is one of the main themes of the show.

If you’re looking for a short anime to have a good time with, then the five-minute episodes of the series should be a good time burner. It’s easy to get into and catch up compared to other series wherein there are many episodes one must go through before fully understanding what is going on should they miss something.

The voice acting is also on point if you’re looking for some dreamy males to admire. If you can’t find the appeal in the other points, then you could find one in this point. After all, it’s easy enough to pretend that the male characters are charming you instead of the female lead.
Speaking of charming, the romance, it is sweet when it happens at certain episodes and will leave you smiling as you see the transition of one of the characters from being wary of the main girl to being conscious about their closeness.

The male characters, now with many other reverse harems, the viewer gets glimpses into the past of the male leads in order to get a better idea of what makes them tick. The same goes for this series as the viewer is introduced to co-workers and relatives that give a glimpse into the other characteristics of the male other than what the portray.

The Bad

While the romance is good, it also fell flat like the plot did as the series went on. There was good development with one the character and even the trope of them attempting to confess only for an incident to occur leading to a misunderstanding between them and the female lead. But then after around 2-3 episodes, it was as if it was cut off. So basically we get these little teases and build ups only for it to lead to nothing.

The female character, like many female leads in reverse harems, does not show high points in terms of the personality department. Is she nice? Yes, does she have talent? Yes, but then you don’t really see much else, and it is frustrating as there is also a rival who bullies her and while it is commendable that she doesn’t snap back, it would be nice to see her actually stand up for herself.

The art while beautiful seemed somewhat lacking in the animation of the baking, which is supposed to be the main theme of the series. Instead the characters do some fancy moves and voila, beautiful sweet is served.

Conclusion

Overall, in my opinion at least, it’s an okay anime to watch if you want something fluffy and quick to pass the time. Yes, the plot is not overly great but then again it is a short anime and there isn’t much credibility to be found in the reverse harem genre, unless you count “Ouran High School Host Club” but that is different story. It has pretty art, nice music and good voice acting so at least, if you can ignore the plot you can enjoy these points at least.
