Ani.Me Feature - Some CLAMP Manga Series that are On Hiatus, Cancelled, or Discontinued

If you’re a fan of Magic Knight Rayearth, Card Captor Sakura, and Tsubasa Chronicles, then you probably know CLAMP—the popular all-girls manga group that had not only build a reputation in the manga industry, they also branched out into the anime industry due to the anime adaptations of their well-loved manga creations.

Although they have made a pillar for themselves in the respective industries, not all is smooth sailing for CLAMP. In case you are not aware, the manga group also had a few of their series that have been discontinued or put on indefinite hold for a couple of reasons. So without further ado, here are some of CLAMP’s manga series that were on hiatus, cancelled, or discontinued.

X/1999

If you love end of the world stories, then you’ll probably like this one. X/1999 was a manga series CLAMP launched in 1992. It is a shojo manga with a storyline that takes place in the year 1999 where it is said to be “the end of days”. The manga was highly anticipated by most readers due to its unique combinations of apocalyptic theories (religious and secular), Armageddon, apocalyptic fiction, and the related. The story of X/1999 begins with an ordinary high school boy named Kamui Shiro who returned to Tokyo after an almost six-year absence. The reason he returned is for him to be there for his two precious people named Fuma and Kotori Monou and also to fulfill his mother’s last dying wish to reunite with them.

Fast forward, Kamui soon realizes that Tokyo is now an official gathering of superhuman individuals and he is one of them.

Publishing the manga series was both a gamble for CLAMP and its publisher Kadokawa Shouten’s Monthly Asuka for reasons that the scenarios and situations being illustrated in the manga were quite similar to real disasters that happen in Japan such as murders and earthquakes. It went on hiatus in 2003 and as of 2005, CLAMP is still looking for a proper magazine publisher who is willing (and brave enough) to publish the manga series’ last couple of chapters.

Clover

Clover is a cyberpunk and fantasy manga in which CLAMP made in 1997. The story is about a young girl named Sue who is one of the gifted children being tagged by the military as “Clovers”. Clovers have the magic abilities to manipulate all kinds of technology as well as summoning various weapons out of nowhere and teleportation. Sue was then acquainted by her escort and a former military soldier named Kazuhiko as she wanted to be with people and be able to visit “Fairy Park”.

The series went to a halt in 1999 after the magazine Amie stopped its operations. The manga was compiled into four volumes and as of this time, it’s still not for certain when will this series be continued.

The Legend of Chun Hyang

The Legend of Chun Hyang was one of CLAMP’s short-lived series and for one thing, it had good potential to be a long-running manga. To give you a little information about this, it is loosely based from the popular Korean folktale of the same name.

The time this manga was ongoing was also the time CLAMP experimented on a different art technique for manga sketches and backgrounds. This however did not go well which made the team redo the chapters until it was decided that their series will be dropped leaving this manga discontinued without a proper conclusion.
