Most people donated blood for a good cause, why not donate blood for the sake of an anime character? From April 27 to May 9, the mah-jong series known as “Akagi” will be celebrating its 25th anniversary and in one of those days, there will be a blood drive.
The “Akagi” series which began in 1992 from the hands of Noboyuki Fukumoto, tells the story of Shigeru Akagi, a gambler who decudes to nonchalantly enter into yakuza version of the mah-jong world while trying to shake off the police following an incident in 1958 involving a death-defying chicken game. Though initially having no idea of the game, Akagi with his wits alone manages at 13 to earns a mythical status only to disappear right after.
Years later and he is found once more by small-gambler Nangou who finds the fast rising mah-jong player who is 19 and makes a come-back into the yakuza’s mah-jong scene once more. By far his biggest rival is the highly wealthy Iwao Washizu, a man who tempts people to bet their lives for the chance to win a large amount of money and plays with glass tiles in his games.
On May 3 at the Zingaro Space at 4:30 p.m., the anniversary celebration shall be having what is called a “gamified” blood drive, which in other words can be considered as voting through the donation of blood. For this drive donors shall be given a form wherein they will have to choose between the talented mah-jong player Akagi or the notorious mafiouso Washizu.
Your choice will decide who lives and who perishes, and when the drive is over, the results to be announced.
That said, it does not mean that donors will not receive something in return; regardless on who they vote for, donors will also get a limited-edition Akagi poster and sticker. As for other features of the celebration, fans can also enjoy a display of cover illustrations, as well as limited-edition goods for sale.
