It was announced on Tuesday that Sui Ishida’s best-selling manga and franchise Tokyo Ghoul will have its very own live-action film adaptation slated to premiere on July 29. The film’s staff has updated the visual material for the movie which features Masataka Kubota wearing the ghoul mask of the protagonist Kaneki Ken.
While the fanbase seems to be anticipating for the film’s premiere, there were also a bit of concerns. Fans have expressed worry that the film project might not go well as planned due to the recent announcement of film actress Fumika Shimizu’s retirement from the entertainment industry. Shimizu will play the role of Toka Kirishima and it for the first time that she had cut her hair short intended for her role. The film staff expressed that “We want to convey the ghoul and human drama and strong themes of the [original] work through the film. Those feelings will never change.”
Below is a picture of the Christian Dada’s design for the ghoul mask to be used in the film. Dada is a designer and a fan of the franchise. He is also responsible for the costume designs and the masks in the film.
Kentaro Hagiwara is the film’s director. Other cast members include EXILE’s Nobuyuki Suzuki as Kotaro, Yuu Aoi as Rize, and Yo Oizumi and Kureo.
To give you an idea about Tokyo Ghoul, here’s a synopsis as described by Viz Media:
Ghouls live among us, the same as normal people in every way – except their craving for human flesh. Shy Ken Kaneki is thrilled to go on a date with the beautiful Rize. But it turns out that she’s only interested in his body – eating it, that is. When a morally questionable rescue transforms him into the first half-human half-Ghoul hybrid, Ken is drawn into the dark and violent world of Ghouls, which exists alongside our own.
