New Film “Tsugeru Lu no Uta” Revealed by Director Maasaki Yuasa with List of Staff and Cast

A new original anime film will be coming to the screen in Japan this May 19 as announced on Thursday by its director, Masaaki Yuasa. The film is entitled “Tsugeru Lu no Uta” a.k.a “Lu over the wall’ or “Song of Lu Who Informs the Dawn” and it shall be his first anime film with an original story. Prior to working on this film, Maasaki is recognized for having directed a number of other films including “Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome” and “Mind Game”.

In addition to his announcement of production for the film, TOHO has released a trailer stream for the film featuring Maasaki’s previous work including his upcoming work set to premier on April 7, “Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome”.

For this film, Maasaki will working at his Science SARU studio and will be collaborating the script with writer Reiko Yoshida, recognized for her work in various anime and films including “A Silent Voice” and “Tamako Love Story”. As for the rest of the staff, Yoko Nemu, writer and artist of unique works such as “Trap Hole” and “Pandora” will be working on the character designs.

Working as the animation director of the film is the animator behind the films “Wolf Children” and “Summer Wars”, Nobutake Ito. Hiroshi Ohno will be working as the art director, having done work in the films “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and “A Letter to Momo”. Overall the listed staff have shown notable people working in the production of the film.

For the story of “Tsugeru Lu no Uta” set in a currently unnamed harbour town, it centers around a boy named Kai, a gloomy middle school student who one day unexpectedly meets a mermaid named Lu. Playing as these two main characters are Tani Kanon as Lu and Shōta Shimoda as Kai with Shin’ichi Shinohara playing as Lu’s father and the comic duo Chidori play fishermen
