Having received an honourable mention in the Kyoto Animation Award competition in 2010, the series soon gained a publication under the company in June 2011. There are three volumes for the series and in October 2012, the anime adaptation of the series was released in October 2012. The story of the series takes focus on a young boy named Yuuta Togashi. During his junior high years, he had suffered from “chūnibyō” a.k.a. “eighth grader syndrome.” Calling himself the “Dark Flame Master” he had believed that he had supernatural powers and thus alienated himself from his classmates. Now entering into high school, he finds his past incredibly embarrassing and seeks to make a fresh start in a school where he doesn’t know anyone.

His path towards forgetting his past however, is proven easier said than done as he encounters Rikka Takanashi, a delusional girl in class who learns of his past and becomes interested in him.
