It’s been a while since we’ve last heard of news for Netflix’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop. Its lead star John Cho also appears to be keeping a low profile since the announcement—until today.
Pop culture writer Kayleigh Donaldson recently tweeted a picture of the actor sporting a vaguely familiar hairstyle. Honestly at first look it looks like bed hair, but a closer inspection (and a reading of Donaldson’s tweet) reveals that Cho “has the Spike Spiegel hair now”. Check it out for yourself below!
Donaldson writes in her tweet, “Guys, John Cho has the Spike Spiegel hair now and I fucking told you he would be perfect for this role! Dreams do come true.”
In the picture above, Cho appears to have grown out his hair and added some curls to it as well. His hair also seemed to have gotten a little oomph to add some volume at the top and sides, so as to achieve the Spike Spiegel look. Overall, his look (and his casting still) has divided the internet, with one camp going all nope for Cho, and the other still on a wait and see attitude—but not totally dismissing the actor. As usual, all we can do is wait for the series to actually drop, and then we can all pass judgment.
The live-action adaptation is a co-production between Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, which is a partnership between producer Marty Adelstein (Teen Wolf, Prison Break) and British production company ITV Studios. The original anime’s director, Shinichi Watanabe, will be serving as consultant for the Netflix adaptation. Key staff from Sunrise, the anime studio that produced the original series, will also be serving as the show’s executive producers along with other Western producers.
Cowboy Bebop follows the story of Spike Spiegel and his crew aboard the spaceship Bebop. The series is mostly about their crew’s adventures in hunting down space criminals and turning them in for a reward. The story’s main conflict, however, centers on the rivalry between Spike and his former best friend Vicious, with the former seeking to avenge the death of the woman he loved.
