Synopsis
Fifteen-year-old high-school boy Wakan Gojou is not your typical male student. He has a hobby of crafting Japanese dolls gained from his grandfather but due to a social trauma as a child, he has hidden his passion. That s until he had an encounter with Kitagawa who is a sociable gyaru, who is the complete opposite of him. They soon share their passions with one another which leads to their odd relationship.
The Good
There are many different points which made the series stand out as a unique shoujo piece. The biggest highlight of the series, however, is in how it develops both the story and the characters. The way it delves into Wakan’s background and shows his change as he hangs out with Kitagawa is well done and gives a lot of potential to their dynamic. More than this, the way it delves into the world dolls and cosplay gives something for the manga to be considered unique. The detailing in both art and explanation makes for the main reason to check the series out.
The Bad
The first thing to be noted is that it can get a tad heavyhanded with the dan service and accentuating Kitagawa’s sensualness and Wakan’s awkwardness over it. For the first few times it made sense as a comedy piece, but as the series went on, it felt as if it’s become a repetitive note. Other than this, the obvious romance development is rather cliche on the manga’s part and personally, it takes away the potential of the series.
Conclusion
It’s a series that has a unique concept and well-developed characters for the most part. The idea of exploring hobbies like dollmaking and cosplay and going in-depth into its details makes for a fun idea. If it were not for the large amount of fanservice and the predictably developing romance there could have been more potential for the series. Still, there is a nice story to be found in the series and when weighing the good and the bad, there is more good to be found.
