First Episode Impression: Muhyo to Rouji no Mahouritsu Soudan Jimusho

Synopsis

For anyone who faces a problem involving the supernatural, there are two people that one can go to. They are young genius Magical Law Executor, Toru Muhyo and his assistant, Jiro Kusano. Together they track and find ghosts, then send the spirits to heaven or hell depending on the account of their lives in his magical law book.

The Good

This is a series that holds some enjoyably classic supernatural/horror elements while also adding something unique. The way it blends elements of the supernatural and fantasy with spells and laws to govern beings like spirits and youkai are certainly unique. What’s more, the style and animation really brought out these elements while giving a unique look to the series. From the magic casting to the monsters that make an appearance, there was a solid balance in their presentation.

With the characters, while we only got a general idea to their personality, their introduction and presentation in the episode brought in a solid mystery to them. It also helps that their dynamic and looks are not often seen, not in Muhyo’s case at least.

The Bad

There’s no other way to say it, the conflict of the episode was just a tad cliche and over the top. Sure, there are some good points to it, but the whole friend ending up being hit by a train because her hand was let go off is a little off. Nothing against the idea, but the presentation could have been done better. Honestly, this is just a nitpick for a first episode. If anything a flaw that could be pointed out in the episode is how cliche the characters can be. But again, it’s a small pick and there is still room for development.

Conclusion

It’s a series that gives a unique blend while having a classic style to it. The concept is different and acts as a solid hook but the characters could have been done better. Storywise, there is a lot of potentials to be found in terms of mystery and worldbuilding. As a first episode, there aren’t any prominent issues that could affect the series to be found. It’s a different sort of supernatural series that left the sort of impression that makes you want to watch more.
