What We See so Far - Tensei Ouji wa Daraketai

Synopsis

Haruto was an ordinary Japanese student who worked hard and studied constantly. One day after getting hit by a truck, he finds himself waking up reincarnated as Phil Graceheart, the youngest child in a royal family. Apparently, the young prince had sustained a head injury when saving a maid from falling down the stairs and now he holds memories of his past life. Armed with the knowledge of his past self, Haruto only has one goal in mind, living a carefree and relaxed life.

The Good

It’s always nice to see a change of pace in the isekai genre, especially when it is with a male protagonist. Usually, the set up with Haruto’s type of character is them either setting out on their own or becoming a largely admired figure. There are some stories that do take a different turn, but the family element of the series is fun. Family characters aren’t often touched on in isekai stories and most often they end up fading in the background. The way that the series shows different bonding moments mixed in with the comedy really brings a unique touch for the series.

Then there is the focus of the fantasy aspect of the series. Personally, there isn’t enough isekai or even fantasy manga that features summon animals or just magical creatures. There is a certain other manga series which features a talking wolf type creature but that one holds a completely different concept. With this series, it presents not only some good character development but also some lovely bonding as well.

The Bad

There are a lot of elements that are pretty standard now with a lot of isekai stories. There is the whole car accident resulting in reincarnation trope. Then there’s the whole prodigal child who doesn’t want to be noticed trope. Really, if it wasn’t for the whole family and creature familiar elements, this would be a standard and highly cliche series. Really, even his look isn’t all that different either, there are at least two other isekai characters that have similar looks.

Conclusion

For the most part, this is a cute series that brings a different set-up. Whether it be on how Phil bonds with his family or how he gets his familiar, the change of pace is fun. Still, the general tropes of an isekai story are pretty obvious. Honestly, the whole prodigal child via past memories trope is getting old. On the other hand, there is a lot of cute and funny aspects to enjoy and the story flow is not all that bad.
